It is a aromatic shrub growing about 2 meters high with erect stems and bearing simple toothed leaves and yellow solitary flowers are borne at the branch tips.

PARTS USED :
The dried leaves are used and are referred to as Damianae folium.

PROPERTIES:
It is a stimulant plant with aphrodisiac properties used in the prevention and treatment of sexual disturbances, loss of libido as well as menstrual problems. It is furthermore also used for treating impotence and prostate problems while also fighting fatigue, depression and stress.

It contains a cyanogenic glycoside (tetraphyllin B) and low levels arbutin. The plant is a bitter, pungent and warming herb with a fig-like flavor.

Damiana also has adaptogenic properties helpful in anti-stress, memory enhancement, and increased physical and/or sexual performance. It also has a vasodilatory effect and has a relaxant effect on the smooth muscle and has also shown promise in assisting with weight loss as well as diabetes – although further clinical investigation is necessary.
